CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / 01 Mar) – Unidentified gunmen killed a sentinel in an attack just outside a police base in Bukidnon province on the main island of Mindanao, south of Manila.
Police said the attack occurred late Wednesday in Malaybalay City where the provincial base is located. Police reinforcement also clashed with the attackers, but the gunmen managed to escape, bringing along the slain cop’s automatic rifle.
No group or individual claimed responsibility for the attack and police said it is still investigating whether the killing was connected to communist insurgency.
The New People’s Army, which is fighting for the establishment of a Marxist state, is actively operating in the province.
The rebels have previously liquidated a number of active soldiers and policemen in the southern Philippines. (Mindanao Examiner)
