CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / 02 Jul) – At least three communist insurgents were killed in a clash with security forces in the southern Philippines, the military said Monday.
It said the weekend clash erupted in the outskirts of Butuan City near Agusan del Norte after patrolling troops ran into a group of New People’s Army rebels and a firefight ensued.
There were no reports of military casualties. Troops recovered three automatic rifles and a pair of hand grenades left behind by insurgents.
The military said troops were pursing the NPA gunmen in the hinterlands.
The NPA is the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, which is fighting the past four decades for a Maoist state in the largely Catholic country. (Mark Navales)
