MANILA, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Aug. 12, 2011) - TODO na ang pangangampanya ng Pilipinas upang mapasama ang tanyag na Puerto Princesa Underground River sa lalawigan ng Palawan sa “New 7 Wonders of the World.”

Ang underground river o ang mas kilala bilang Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park ay halos 50 kilometro lamang ang layo mula sa lungsod ng Puerto Princesa.

Mahigit sa 8 kilometro ang haba ng nasabing underground river sa loob ng isang limestone landscape na idineklara naman na Natural World Heritage ng
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization nuong 1999. Ito rin ang pinakamahabang underground river sa buong mundo.

Nuong Pebrero ay nagtungo si Pangulong Benigno Aquino sa Palawan at personal na sinuyod nito ang underground river at namangha ito ng husto sa nakitang kagandahan ng naturang lugar.

At nitong Hunyo lamang ay pormal na inilunsad mismo ni Aquino ang “Puerto Princesa Underground River Campaign.” Inilabas pa ng Pangulo ang Proclamation 182 na: “Declaring a national and international promotion campaign for the Puerto Princesa Underground River as one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature.”

Ang underground river ay tumatagos sa West Philippine Sea at dumadaloy rin sa mahabang lagusan ang sariwang hangin mula sa karagatan. Sa loob nito ay makikita naman ang mga higanteng stalactites at stalagmites, gayun rin ang malalaking mga chambers nito. Mayroon rin itong lagoon na napapaligiran ng matatandang puno at mistulang paraiso ng mga ibat-ibang flora at fauna.

Sa ulat naman ng Italian group na La Venta na nagsagawa ng pagaaral sa underground river ay nabatid na may mga natagpuan rare fossils ng sea cows o Sirenia doon na sinasabing mula pa sa Miocene period na 20 milyon taon na ang nakakalipas. Inakalang sa Java, Indonesia lamang ito matatagpuan, ngunit nadiskubre rin ito sa Puerto Princesa Underground River.

Ang “New 7 Wonders of the World” ay isang proyekto o popularity poll na kung saan ay maaaring iboto ng sinuman na mayroong cell phone sa pamamagitan ng SMS o text message ang kanilang paboritong lugar sa mundo. Tinatayang mahigit sa 100 milyon ang mga boboto para sa kanilang paboritong lugar na mapapasama sa “New 7 Wonders of the World” na magtatapos sa Nobyembre 11 ngayon taon.

Nanawagan rin si Aquino sa mamamayang Pilipino na suportahan ang Palawan at iboto ang Puerto Princesa Underground River.

“Baka naman puwedeng makahirit ng isang text para diyan,” ani Aquino. “Pakita po natin kung gaano tayo kabuo. Pakita po natin na talagang, kung may tutulong sa atin, ‘Maraming salamat’, pero ang aahon sa Pilipino ay Pilipino muna.”

“While winning a place in the top seven bolsters our sense of national pride, recognition is not the only thing we can gain. We must also remember that the tourists we can potentially attract will redound to thousands of employment opportunities; our success here will ultimately breed success for Filipinos everywhere,” dagdag pa nito.

Maging si Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo ay nanawagan rin na suportahan ang Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park. “Our local officials should identify possible internet voting centers such as internet cafés, colleges, and universities, and set these up for general public access for the purpose of voting via e-mail,” ayon naman sa memorandum ni Robredo sa mga local government executives.
