Zamboanga del Norte Press Club to hold series of campus journalism workshops
DIPOLOG CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / June 12, 2009) - The Zamboanga del Norte Press Club is to hold a series of campus journalism workshops in an effort to hone the writing skills among elementary and high school students in the province, the Philippine Information Agency reported on Friday.
It said the workshops would be held in nine cluster areas starting next month. The workshops, which has become a regular project of the press club every year, are in partnership with the Department of Education (DepED) and PIA.
Having seen the efforts of the press club in helping the students develop their skills in journalistic writing very laudable, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) and the Embassy of the United States of America through Ambassador Kristie Kenney handed the club some financial support.
The NGCP has provided for the cash prizes that will be given to the winners of the writing competitions during the campus journalism workshops. While the US Embassy has donated $3,000 to the club for the purchase of a laptop computer, projector and projector screen to be used by the lecturers during the seminar.
When ZNPC officers led by President Editha Tomong went to the US embassy in Manila to receive the cash donation, Press Attache Rebecca Brown Thompson told them that the ZNPC was the first local media organization to gain access to the funds of the US Embassy "after thorough background check" and after having found to have a very credible track record with credible and united officers and members.
Topics to be lectured during campus journalism workshops include newswriting, feature writing, editorial writing, copyreading and headline writing, sports writing, page layout, broadcasting, media ethics and laws on libel, according to the PIA.

Multi-sectoral groups commit to stop kidnappings in Sulu

(Photos contributed by Amil Abubakar)SULU, Philippines – The provincial government of Sulu got the commitment and support of various groups to put a stop to the un-Islamic activities of lawless elements and to resolve the current crisis the soonest possible time.
Different organizations and concerned individuals of Sulu manifested their commitment and support to the Province through separate statements released to the media.
In a written statement, the Busbus Peace Promoters Organization said that the recent kidnapping of ICRC personnel brought so much sadness among the inhabitants of Sulu, saying that “it is a condemnable act that must be dealt [with] seriously and be stopped from happening again in the history of the province.
The statement recognizes that the Red Cross is a humanitarian organization that has been offering humanitarian and medical services worldwide.
“Their (Red Cross) dedication to help has long been seen and felt even here in Sulu. And most are aware of the fact that it sees no angle, takes no side in extending its services. Their personnel are friends to everyone,” the statement said.
It said the outlaws took advantage of this “kindness of humanitarian workers to achieve their malice ends.”
In a separate statement, the Sabiel Al-Muhtadeen Foundation, Inc.-Sulu, an umbrella organization of the different mosques and madarios, Muslim religious leaders, professionals, women, youth and other economic sectors of Sulu, “strongly condemns all forms of un-Islamic act of violence and terror particularly the recent kidnapping of three ICRC workers and a certain local resident by the name of (Dionghan) Indiong Que.”
The foundation appealed to those “involved in carrying out such criminal activity to put an end to this heinous crime,” saying that the “political and military consequences of which are only bloodshed, destruction of properties and displacement of our very own people.”
Other groups like the Sultanate of Sulu and North Borneo, the Suara Mahardika, Bansag Babai, the JPIC-Jolo, including the municipal mayors of Sului and the 42nd CRU of the 4CRGAFP are signatories to another statement that expressed their “full and undivided support to Sulu Gov. Abdusakur M. Tan, the Task Force ICRC, the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police to resolve the issue of ICRC kidnapping in the province of Sulu.”
While all of the statements strongly condemn the actions by irresponsible and lawless elements, the groups also called for sobriety and unity among the people of Sulu and exhaust all peaceful means to resolve the crisis. (Philippine Information Office-BASULTA)

"Ang makuyaw mao nga ang mga estudyante nga nagtungha nga naggamit sa mga ginadili nga druga dili motungha ni mo-enroll tungod kay molikay nga mamahimo nga maka-apil sa sampling," si CHR Chairperson Leila de Lima nagkanayon sa Philippine Information Agency.
Kung kini mahitabo, nahadlok siya nga ang testing makabalda sa pagtoon ug pagpalambo sa mga kabataan sa katungod sa pagbaton sa edukasyon.
"Busa, dili kini nakahimo sa random drug testing counter-productive tungod kay gusto nato nga ang atong mga anak magpabilin sa eskwelahan hinoon awhagon sila nga dili mohimo sa maong dautang kalihokan?, siya ang nangutana.

Philippine Gov't Media Join Campaign In Fighting Graft, Corruption
CEBU CITY, Philippines - The Philippine Information Agency in Region 7 has pledged to support the Department of Finance's (DOF) campaign in strengthening government's anti-corruption investigation efforts within revenue-generating agencies based in the Central Visayas.
Finance Undersecretary for Revenue and Legal Operations Atty. Estela V. Sales bared they need to cleanse the image of revenue-generating agencies such as the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) and the Bureau of Customs (BOC), which are under the DOF, where perception of corruption is quite high.
The Revenue Integrity Protection Service (RIPS), a unit under the DOF, has the mandate to conduct lifestyle checks, investigate allegations of graft and corrupt practices among DOF personnel and file the necessary administrative and criminal charges against those found with guilty of committing illegal acts and transactions.
Apart from the PIA-7, other agencies that gave their commitment were the Land Transportation Office (LTO-7), Office of the Presidential Assistant for Central Visayas, the Cebu City Registry of Deeds and City Assessor's Office as well as the business sector represented by the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) and the Cebu Business Club.
Sales expressed optimism that with the commitment of other sister government agencies and the business sector, the fight against graft especially in revenue generating agencies where temptation is high will be given more substance as RIPS has no regional offices.
"If you feel harassed, we have the RIPS," Sales told the business sector represented by CCCI president Edward Gaisano and CBC president Dondi Joseph as she underlined the important participation of the business groups. Sales was referring to any extortion attempts committed by any personnel from the BIR or BOC to businessmen.
The DOF-RIPS likewise signed an agreement with the Police Regional Office (PRO-7) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI-7) to help entrap corrupt personnel and help build cases against them.
Sales however cautioned against mere hearsay in relaying information as the case against alleged corrupt DOF personnel must withstand judicial scrutiny.
Revenue generating agencies are undergoing internal reforms in battling graft in line with the thrust of the Arroyo Administration to wage a war against corruption as job applicants at the BIR undergo integrity check to determine whether he or she is a potential corruptor, according to Sales.
Sales also sought the help of the media for a 'shame campaign' where they publicize the acts of extortion by personnel from the BIR or BOC in order to discourage others to make a similar attempt.
The DOF official however, said it is also unfair to brand BIR and BOC as corrupt agencies as there are a number of personnel who are honest and work hard in the name of public service.

Cebu City - The Philippine Information Agency in Region 7 has pledged to support the Department of Finance's (DOF) campaign in strengthening government's anti-corruption investigation efforts within revenue-generating agencies based in the Central Visayas.
Finance Undersecretary for Revenue and Legal Operations Atty. Estela V. Sales bared they need to cleanse the image of revenue-generating agencies such as the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) and the Bureau of Customs (BOC), which are under the DOF, where perception of corruption is quite high.
The Revenue Integrity Protection Service (RIPS), a unit under the DOF, has the mandate to conduct lifestyle checks, investigate allegations of graft and corrupt practices among DOF personnel and file the necessary administrative and criminal charges against those found with guilty of committing illegal acts and transactions.
Apart from the PIA-7, other agencies that gave their commitment were the Land Transportation Office (LTO-7), Office of the Presidential Assistant for Central Visayas, the Cebu City Registry of Deeds and City Assessor's Office as well as the business sector represented by the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) and the Cebu Business Club.
Sales expressed optimism that with the commitment of other sister government agencies and the business sector, the fight against graft especially in revenue generating agencies where temptation is high will be given more substance as RIPS has no regional offices.
"If you feel harassed, we have the RIPS," Sales told the business sector represented by CCCI president Edward Gaisano and CBC president Dondi Joseph as she underlined the important participation of the business groups. Government Releases Career Service Exam Results
DAVAO CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / July 1, 2008) - The Civil Service Commission announced Tueasday that 327 examinees have passed the Career Service Professional and Sub-professional Paper and Pencil Test that were held in Davao City early this year.
It said there were 2,382 who took the Career Service Professional and 527 examinees for the Sub-professional levels and only 234 or 9.82 % passed the CS Professional and 93 or 17.64% passed the CS Sub-professional.
The Philippine Information Agency also said that the complete list of passers is now available at the CSC Regional Office in Davao City. It said those who took the examinations may also inquire on the following phone numbers (082) 299-1724; 299-1725; 299-1727 or could text at cellphone numbers 0918-7371522 and 0919-4719624.
The CSC and PIA said it will inform those who passed the examinations.
Passers are required to bring the following: 1) 2 pieces 1x1 ID photo with full (surname, first name, m.i.) name tag-Scanned/photocopied/computer enhance pictures are not accepted; 2) examination application receipt (lower portion of the exam application form; 3) one (1) valid ID such as driver's license, passport, SSS, school ID, postal ID; and 4) a completely accomplished CSC Form E-6 with ID photo.

PIA Bares Visit Of US Ambassador Ahead Of Mindanao Trip
COTABATO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / 05 Jul) - The security of U.S. Ambassador Kristie Kenney may be in jeopardy after the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) released Thursday details of her next week's visit to the volatile region of Mindanao, where local troops are battling terrorism and insurgency.
The PIA said Kenney will visit Cotabato City in Maguindanao province on July 9 and 10. She will meet with senior Filipino military commanders and members of the Malaysia-led International Monitoring Team and then inaugurate several U.S. funded projects in the province, one of five under the Muslim autonomous region.
It said Kenney will attend the formal launching of the guidebook “Al Khalifa”. She will also be at the turnover ceremony for a USAID/GEM (United States Agency for International Development/Growth with Equity in Mindanao) built road from Shariff Aguak town to Mamasapano town, all in Maguindanao.
The PIA said Kenney will also visit the headquarters of the Army's 6th Infantry Division and the International Monitoring Team. And she will also have a dinner with the Bangsamoro Development Agency and speak at the Women’s Forum in Cotabato City and visit a Catholic radio station in Cotabato City.
Kenney will also inspect the Awang Airport in the province, previously bombed by terrorists. It was unknown of the PIA had permission from the U.S. Embassy to publish Kenney's itinerary, but her past visits to Mindanao were usually unannounced for security reasons.
The al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf group and the Maoist New People's Army rebels which are fighting the government have previously threatened to attack U.S. targets. (Mindanao Examiner)

Cigarette Smoking Kills, Read This!
ZAMBOANGA CITY - Parents, usually mothers, admonish teenagers not to smoke because government warns it is dangerous to health. And the Philippine Information Agency in Zamboanga City has this report Friday.
Health conscious people do not smoke because they understand the dangers, but not the risks of second-hand smoke.
The smoke people inhale inside restaurants and more so, the smoke in cigarettes left burning by daddy in ashtray. They are secondhand smoke.
What is secondhand smoke? Environmental tobacco smoke, passive smoking, involuntary smoking and a newer, more descriptive term, tobacco smoke pollution mean all the same.
Secondhand smoke comes in two different forms, the side stream smoke and the mainstream smoke. The first is the smoke that wafts from the burning tobacco product and the second is the smoke that the smoker exhales. Both types of secondhand smoke contain harmful chemicals.
Specifically which chemicals are present depend on the type of tobacco product, how it is smoked and the paper in which the tobacco is wrapped. More than 4,000 chemicals make up the haze of secondhand smoke. In addition, more than 60 of the chemicals in cigarette smoke are known to be cancerous, health authorities said.
Some of the substances found in secondhand smoke that are known or suspected to cause cancer include formaldehyde, arsenic, cadmium, and benzene and ethylene oxide.
Few other chemicals in secondhand smoke that might sound familiar, along with their effects on health are: ammonia - irritates lungs, carbon monoxide -hampers breathing by reducing oxygen in the blood, methanol - toxic when inhaled or swallowed and hydrogen cyanide - interferes with proper respiratory function.
The dangerous particles given off in secondhand smoke can linger in the air for hours. Even breathing those in for a short time — as little as 20 or 30 minutes — can harm your health in a variety ways. And breathing in secondhand smoke over years can be even more dangerous, reports said.
With the above-mentioned dangers, the Department of Health in Western Mindanao is posed to conduct an orientation with hotel owners and operators in keeping June as “No Smoking Month.”
DOH’s Dr Agnes Mabolo said the orientation aims at “dismantling the myths of secondhand smoke,” also the “No Smoking Month” theme.
“Coming up with smoke-free environment hotels is a health rewarding endeavor and I hope many hotel owners and operators would decide to provide such atmosphere to the public,” Mabolo said. (Mimi Edaga)
